Sigma-Aldrich's SDS pages include the CAS number, physical properties, handling, storage, and usually the specific product grade. That sounds trivial until you're an hour before a client deadline trying to confirm whether your ethanol is 200 proof or 190 proof. It happened to us. Nitric acid solution formula is HNO₃. That doesn't change. What changes is concentration. A 70% nitric acid solution is a different product than a 20% solution, even though both are 'HNO₃.' If you order by formula alone, you're not buying what you think.
As for muriatic acid vs. hydrochloric acid: yes, they're essentially the same chemical. Muriatic acid is an older, less-pure grade of hydrochloric acid, usually sold at around 31.45% HCl for household or industrial use. Reagent-grade HCl from a lab supplier is typically 37% with far fewer impurities. If your process demands trace-metal specs, the difference between those two matters more than the 'same' formula would suggest.
Quality Perception and Client Trust
Earlier this year, one of our research clients requested a package for a surfactant protein C structure function review. The end-use was a manuscript in revision, so any contamination would be impossible to defend. I could have sourced a cheaper surfactant from a distributor's catalog.
