I trust their purity claims more than most suppliers, and I trust their safety documentation enough to build lab procedures around it. The SDS is not a legally required afterthought; it's your first quality gate. In fact, a supplier who tells you this isn't our strength earns more trust than one who promises everything. I'd rather work with a specialist who knows limits than a generalist who overpromises. Same standard applies to Sigma-Aldrich: use it where it's strong, and don't force it where it isn't.
One more thing: the SDS is only useful if it's current. As of January 2025, I still check the revision date every time I download a PDF from any supplier. GHS classifications get updated. New data appears. An SDS from a box that's three years old isn't trustworthy.
Bottom line: Use a supplier that treats documentation as part of the product. Purity matters, but purity without traceability is a guess, and in a lab, guesses are expensive. That's why Sigma-Aldrich remains my go-to for anything where the SDS has to be right. At least, that's been my experience with specialty and research-grade chemicals. Just don't ask them for bulk methanol at commodity pricing. That's not their job. A good supplier tells you where they're strong.
