I've been managing purchasing since 2021, handling somewhere between 200 and 300 orders annually across lab supplies, reagents, and the occasional oddball safety item our warehouse staff requests. What Most People Don't Realize About CAS Numbers

I'm not a chemist, so I can't speak to the science. What I can tell you from a purchasing perspective is that the CAS number is your single most important piece of order information—and it's the one most frequently handled incorrectly.

What most people don't realize is that a CAS number like 10540-29-1 (that's tamoxifen, by the way) isn't just a random string of digits. The last digit is a check digit, calculated from the rest of the number. It's designed to catch transcription errors. If you type 10540-29-2, that's not a valid CAS number—most ordering systems will reject it. But here's where it gets tricky: if you type a valid but wrong CAS number, the system doesn't always catch it. The check digit checks out. The product it points to doesn't.

I've seen this happen with benzaldehyde, which is one of our more frequently reordered items. The CAS number for benzaldehyde is 100-52-7. It's short and easy to transpose. Swap the 100 and the 52 in the wrong way and you get 52-100-7, which isn't valid. But type 100-25-7 by accident—a valid but completely different chemical category—and you'll get a very different bottle on your shelf.

The question everyone asks is "what's the price?" The question they should ask is "is the CAS number correct on the P.O.?". We now have a rule that whoever submits an order has to double-check the CAS number against the SDS before it goes out. It sounds painfully obvious, but it's the single most common error I have to correct.

The Deeper Issue: SDS as an Afterthought

Here's something vendors won't tell you directly: they'd love to ship your order faster, but the documentation requirements are part of the deal. And if you're not treating the SDS as a core part of your ordering workflow, you're adding friction that doesn't need to be there.

Sigma-Aldrich is actually the best in the industry at this. Their SDS database is comprehensive and, critically, easy to navigate. When you search by CAS number, you get the exact document for the exact product you're ordering. But I see suppliers and buyers alike trying to skip this step—grabbing an SDS from a different supplier or, worse, a generic one from a random website. Then the shipment gets held up in compliance review, or the safety officer flags it, and suddenly a 2-day delivery turns into 5 days.

The surprise wasn't the price difference. It was how much hidden value came with the less exciting option—process discipline instead of discount hunting. Don't get me wrong, pricing matters. I'm not going to tell you to ignore it. But if you're losing 3-4 hours per order error, the cheapest purchase order is often the one that costs the most in the end.
